[ sometimes, he visits peter in the hospital.

it's easy to slip past the nurses, slide into peter's room, and watch him sit blank-still in the moonlight, his burned and scarred face casting shadows on the tiled floor. chris doesn't ever do anything but watch, and not for long, but he stays—he stays, standing in the dark, and remembers.

beacon hills has always been a place for the argents. gerard had moved their family around, town to town, hunting and tracking the werewolves they'd been sworn to kill at a young age—and then, one day, they'd left everything behind. chris and kate had been forced to abandon their friends, their school, their lives, to go be different people elsewhere. to go start anew. to learn how to hunt.

chris hadn't witnessed the hale arson, but he'd known. it's been six years for peter, six years comatose. six years after the fire when chris had decided to move back, and only because of laura hale—to return to this ghost of a town, relive all the memories, do the research, and find the wolf who slaughtered the woman he'd known in his youth.

and instead, he'd found peter. he'd found the one man he'd tried to hide being friends with from his father, because it had been "wrong"—and he'd found him broken.

chris has learned to leave his emotions at the door. it's been so long, anyway. old memories, and he'd old too.

but still, he stays—

—and after he remembers, he leaves.

(after all, it's better this way.)
